Platée
Pinchgut Opera
By Jean-Philippe Rameau
Directed by Neil Armfield
Celebrated Australian film, theatre and opera director Neil Armfield makes his Pinchgut debut in this deliciously twisted comedy by Jean-Philippe Rameau, one of the greatest French baroque composers.
Rameau’s one-of-a-kind comédie lyrique tells the story of the irresistibly outlandish marsh nymph Platée being tricked into believing that Jupiter is in love and wants to marry her. Taking aim at the very nature of French opera itself and turning tradition on its head with music of exceptional brilliance, Rameau thrills us with ravishing melodies and striking shifts of mood and colour – prepare to be enchanted.
Living up their reputation as Australia’s premier Baroque opera company, Pinchgut’s phenomenal production brims with virtuosic performances. Kanen Breen shines as Platée, alongside an incredible cast of Australian icons including Cathy-Di Zhang, Peter Coleman-Wright and Cheryl Barker, with Cantillation chorus and 28 expert players of the Orchestra of the Antipodes.
