In 2023 the Festival was able to once again offer a comprehensive Creative Learning programme for students (including primary and secondary, kura kaupapa and early childhood care centres), community and industry groups to engage more deeply with our artists and programme.

For AAF 2023 this included:

  • 22 live in-person events (10 of these were dedicated school matinee performances, plus a dress rehearsal viewing for The Unruly Tourists )
  • 4 digital productions
  • 6 free extensive education resources
  • 11 pre-show and post-show talks,
  • 9 workshops and masterclasses

More than 1,000 school students were able to participate by attending productions at very reduced price tickets or joining in on workshops and discussions. University students, dance groups and choirs were able to have in depth sessions with artists, to enrich their depth of knowledge. And our artists love being able to give back to the communities that grow as a result of this exchange.

Here are just a couple of comments from people who participated in our programmes:

  • “These workshops are of such value to the dance community in Aotearoa. Not often does internationally renowned contemporary dance reach the shores of New Zealand, and not often are we treated to works with years of mastering and history behind them with mature dance artists who have spent years refining and offering such depth to a show and their technique.”
  • “Masterclass/workshop/guest speaker visits also enable us to welcome and thank these guests with tikanga Māori at the centre. This gives us pride in welcoming and hosting speakers, it affords respect and agency to our Māori tauira, and it bring professionals and training professionals into the same unique experience, thereby enhancing the mana of all.”
